Some wedding days feel less like an event and more like a glimpse into a life two people have thoughtfully built together. Cher and Allen’s June wedding was exactly that.
Having met in music school, Cher and Allen share a life deeply rooted in music. Both accomplished musicians, their story has been shaped by the art they create and the life they share. With Allen beginning a new chapter as a music professor at Columbus State University, they chose to celebrate their marriage in a way that felt true to them: intimate, intentional, and entirely their own.
Their ceremony took place in the backyard of their home in Columbus’s quiet Lakebottom neighborhood. Surrounded by friends and family, they exchanged vows in the place where their life together unfolds every day. I had the honor of not only photographing their wedding but also officiating their ceremony.
From the beginning, Cher and Allen wanted their photographs to feel artistic and documentary, with as little prompting as possible. No elaborate posing or manufactured moments. Just the day as it happened, with all its tenderness, movement, and in-between moments.
One of the most meaningful parts of the day was photographing them playing piano together in their home. Later, they shared a musical performance for their loved ones over dinner at the historic Goetchius House, turning the evening into a celebration of the very thing that first brought them together.
After a relaxed cocktail hour at home, everyone gathered for dinner, laughter, and music. Among the thoughtful details was a gift from Allen’s parents: an album filled with photographs from his childhood, a beautiful starting point for the two of them to begin building a family album of their own.
What I loved most about Cher and Allen’s wedding was how little it needed to be staged. Every part of the day had meaning because it belonged to them.
Their wedding was a reminder that the most beautiful photographs often come from simply letting life happen.
